There were twelve participants from Tamil Nadu, six from Andhra Pradesh, three from Orissa, six from Thailand and four from Bali – Indonesia. There were four resource persons from India. Dr. .Bhanumathi, from Chennai and Dr. Gaurang Dash, from Orissa both doctorates in puppetry, Upendra, a theatre person from Bangalore and Suryanarayana from Kalakshetra Chennai served as resource persons for this event. The resource persons acted in coordination and brought about very positive energy. Dr. Chinnapath from Thailand was the resource person from outside India with inputs to this program.
While the focus of the workshop was to learn techniques of puppet making, the performance aspect was given importance, as the puppeteers see themselves as both performers and puppet makers. Any improvement in puppet making would be undertaken only if it is seen as adding class to a performance. The Thai group took time to demonstrate the step by step processes of puppet making in Thailand.
A joint performance on the penultimate day was very well produced and had a good audience. The groups took turns in performing for school children on different days.
