The survey basically aimed at finding the roots of this craft and reasons for its decline. The purpose of this survey was to locate artisans along with their families who have been involved in this craft, and understand how many continue to be involved and how many have moved away.
The premise was that this would give an insight into the process involved in the making of sungadi saris. This deeper understanding of the craft would help in better designing of the end product and also identify people for the sungadi training programme which is the second stage of this project.
The survey was followed by a workshop where 45 women were trained over a period of one week in the technique. Subsequently sample production was carried out in their homes over a couple of months. October1, 2011 finally saw a market testing exhibition-cum-sale of the new products. The sale was a runaway success. The long term production and marketing channels are now being put in place.
